Granby hands Canton season-ending 10th loss
GRANBY, Nov. 25 – It was the annual Thanksgiving rivalry game between Canton and Granby for the old milk jug. But both teams had their minds elsewhere Wednesday night.

Playing in its first game since Nov. 6, the undefeated Bears were looking to polish their game and not give away any secrets. As thrilled as Granby was to finish an undefeated 10-0 season and reclaim the old, red, milk jug with a dominating 42-0 win over Canton, the Bears were playing with an eye toward next Tuesday’s Class S quarterfinal.

Canton, meanwhile, was trying to build a foundation that they can grow upon. It’s been a tough year for the overmatched Warriors. Inexperience, youth, injuries and some players leaving the team at mid-season have left Canton (0-10, 0-5 Pequot West) without many options. Undersized freshmen seldom have success at the varsity level especially against stronger upperclassmen.

Canton had more yardage returning seven kickoffs (87) than they had passing (36) or running the ball (49). The Warriors were shutout for the first time since October 2012 against Gilbert/Northwestern.

Click scored on a 71-yard touchdown reception from Higley in the first quarter – the longest scoring play of the season for Canton.

Quarterback Alex Higley completed a career-high 13 of 30 passes for 132 yards and one touchdown for the winless Warriors (0-8, 0-4 Pequot West). Brock Steinfeldt had 16 tackles including one for a loss for Canton.

Kyle Griffith ran for a game-high 120 yards and two touchdowns, including an 86-yard scamper in the fourth quarter.

Canton (0-7, 0-3 Pequot West) welcomed back quarterback Alex Higley and running back/receiver Eddie Melton, who had missed the past few games with injuries and illness. Higley completed 12 of 25 passes for 150 yards and two interceptions. Melton caught a game-high seven receptions for 97 yards.

Nonnewaug back runs over Warriors in shutout win
WOODBURY, Sept. 26 -- Nonnewaug running back Zach Mauro is off to a great start for his senior season. In two of three games, he has run for nearly 300 yards. He has rushed for 12 touchdowns to help the Chiefs win two of their first three games for the first time in their football history.

Mauro was off to the races Saturday in Woodbury with a dominating performance in a 35-0 win over Canton. Mauro ran for a school-record 297 yards on 17 carries and scored five touchdowns. That is one touchdown shy of the school record he set on opening day with six TDs and 292 yards rushing in a 24-point win over Enfield.

CREC rallies to beat Canton for first varsity win
CANTON, Sept. 19 – Canton High coach Chris Currier can see the improvement of his team but the results aren’t necessarily showing up on the field.

The CREC co-op football team erased a 14-point deficit and scored 24 unanswered points in the fourth quarter to stun Canton, 38-28 and earn their first-ever varsity victory.

“We let one get away,” Currier said. “We played three quarters of good football. We were driving the ball. We were doing what we wanted to do. We were grinding it out.”

Tigerhawks rally in second half to beat Warriors in opener
CANTON, Sept 12 -- Games become a bit more challenging when you’re making mistakes and committing penalties. Canton couldn’t overcome adversity Saturday in its season opening contest with the Sport Medical Science Academy/University High co-op team. On the other side of the field, the Tigerhawks overcame the loss of three starters due to preseason injuries and scored 20 unanswered points in the second half to beat Canton, 34-21 in a Pequot Conference Western Division contest.

Warriors will be challenged after a championship season
CANTON, Sept. 9 – A year ago, the Canton High football team had one of its greatest seasons ever. The Warriors (10-2) won a school-record 10 games, won its first championship since 1958, beat Avon in OT to capture that Pequot Uncas title and qualified for the CIAC Class S playoffs for the first time.

A new era in Canton High football begins Saturday under first-year coach Chris Currier when the Warriors host SMSA/University at 1 p.m. on the turf field at the high school. “Realistically, we’ll be competitive. I’m not saying we’re going to win 10 games and I’m not saying we’re going to lose seven games. It will be somewhere in the middle,” Currier said.
